Double Vowels

We already know that it is safe to drop one letter of double consonants but what about double vowels “a”, “e”, “i”, “o” and “u”?

We learned in an earlier post that “oo” has the “u” sound and is written with a ”u”.

I scanned the list of words output by Merium Webster’s Word Finder and concluded that one “a” can be dropped.

Same for “ee”, “ii” and “uu”.

Thus feel free to drop one letter of a double vowel. There are probably cases where both letters can be changed to another vowel like for the case for “oo”, but that’s beyond the scope of this investigation.
